Dear Justice Ginsburg,

I am delighted to have been asked by the Council of Lincoln’s Inn to invite you to become an Honorary Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn. An Honorary Bencher has the same rights and privileges as an Ordinary Bencher, except in relation to holding office, voting, and attending committees. I enclose a booklet about the Inn which I hope you will find interesting.

An election to the Bench takes effect when an Honorary Bencher has accepted the invitation, whereupon the election is made public. I do very much hope you will feel able to accept.

Yours sincerely.
Michal Wright

American Inns of Court Presents 2003 Awards
Each year, the American Inns of Court presents three national awards at the Celebration of Excellence held at the United States Supreme Court. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy will host this year’s event on Saturday, October 11.

The A. Sherman Christensen Award is given in the name of the founder of the first American Inn of Court and this award is bestowed upon a member of an American Inn of Court who, at the local, state, or national level has provided distinguished, exceptional and significant leadership to the American Inns of Court movement.

The 2003 recipient of the Christensen Award is Senior Judge Lowell A. Reed, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He is the founding president of the Temple Inn in Philadelphia, and has been instrumental in the formation of many other Inns in the state, including, most recently, the Bucks County Inn.

The Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Award recognizes a person who has rendered exemplary service to the legal profession in the areas of legal excellence, professionalism, civility and ethics. Candidates are nominated through open nationwide nominations.

Judge Patricia M. Wald has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Powell Award. Judge Wald served on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1979 until 1999. Upon leaving the federal bench, Judge Wald served as a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) at The Hague, Netherlands, where she rendered significant decisions in the field of international humanitarian law. She currently serves as the Chair of the Open Society Institute’s Criminal Justice Initiative.

The Sandra Day O’Connor Award for Professional Service recognizes an Inn member in practice for ten or fewer years for excellence in public interest or pro bono activities. The award is named in honor of Justice O’Connor, a long-time supporter of the American Inns of Court and a paragon of professional service throughout her distinguished career, who exemplifies legal excellence, civility, ethics and professionalism.

Richmond, Virginia attorney Maya M. Eckstein has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Sandra Day O’Connor Award for her outstanding work in public service, pro bono and community service on behalf of indigent persons. Ms. Eckstein is a litigation attorney in the Richmond offices of Hunton &….
