Letter from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Randy J. Holland re Simmie Knox and Cancer – June 6, 2011

CHAMBERS OF JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG
Supreme Court of the United States
Washington, D. C. 20543

June 6, 2012

The Honorable Randy J. Holland
Supreme Court of Delaware
P.O. Box 369
Georgetown, Delaware 19947

Dear Randy:

My day was brightened by the news of Simmie Knox’s honorary degree. When Spottswood Robinson III’s portrait was unveiled at the D.C. Circuit, I put the artist’s card in my pocket, planning to select him, one day, for my Court of Appeals portrait. When that time came, Simmie had a daunting challenge. His subject was 10 months past colorectal cancer surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation that ended just a few weeks before Simmie came to chambers to observe and photograph me. The portrait shows me as I hoped I would be once my health and strength were restored.

With appreciation,

Ruth

Ruth Bader Ginsburg
