Letter from Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to Justice Randy J. Holland: April 23, 2008

April 23, 2008

The Honorable Randy J. Holland Supreme Court of Delaware
34 The Circle
Georgetown, DE 19947

Dear Justice Holland:

For two years now, the Sandra Day O’Connor Project on the State of the Judiciary at Georgetown Law has provided a forum for discussion of the independence of the judiciary at the state and federal level.

Among its activities, it has sponsored two conferences, the 2006 Conference on the State of the Judiciary, and the 2007 Conference, the Debate Over State Court Elections and Judicial Elections. In 2008, I have asked the Project to focus on another urgent matter: our courts and corporate citizenship. I am interested in this subject for two reasons: first, because I believe that independent courts are essential to preserve stable markets, and second, because corporate citizens are instrumental in moving the policy agenda of Congress and the state legislatures. I hope that the people who govern those corporations, from their shareholders to their CEOs, will join with me in the effort to keep our courts fair and impartial, and capable of attracting and keeping the best qualified jurists on the bench.

PLEASE HOLD October 2, 2008 on your calendar for Our Courts and Corporate Citizenship. The Conference will be held at Georgetown Law, 600 New Jersey Avenue NW, Washington DC from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

An invitation and registration information will be sent to you in late May. I hope that you will be able to join me for this important conference.

Sincerely yours,
Sandra Day O’Connor
