PERSONAL
The Hon. Randy J. Holland Supreme Court of Delaware
P.O. Box 369
Georgetown, Delaware 19947Dear Randy,
Thank you for your letter. I am delighted you are nominating Justice Sandra Day O’Connor for the American Bar Association John Marshall Award.
I shall not repeat the detailed analysis of Justice O’Connor’s credentials that others have provided. She is an excellent choice I cannot think of a better one. I am happy to second your nomination of Justice O’Connor for the Award.
Under our complicated rules the simplest way for me to do so is to send you this letter, in response to yours, with the understanding that you may forward it to others as as you wish.
With my best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen BreyerCategories: Stephen Breyer -

Honorable Randy J. Holland
Supreme Court of Delaware

Georgetown, DE 19947Dear Justice Holland (crossed out and replaced with “Randy”),
Thank you for serving as a small group judicial facilitator for “Fair and Independent Courts: A Conference on the State of the Judiciary”. Your participation and your own judicial expertise lent depth and gravity to the work of crafting recommendations for a plan of action on the important issues discussed at the Conference.
The Conference has already accomplished important work. By educating leaders in their respective fields from across the nation, we have begun to increase public understanding of the critical role filled by courts in our democracy. We hope that all those who attended the Conference will return to their workplaces and communities with a renewed appreciation for the judiciary and that they will work both to defend the independence of the courts, and to improve them.
Your contribution to this project was invaluable. Your stature and your knowledge helped to make the Conference newsworthy, substantive and productive. We hope that you enjoyed the opportunity to work with people from other parts of the country and from other professions who, like you, are concerned about the future of our nation’s courts.
The work of the Supreme Court affects the lives of many Americans. We think that this Conference, too, can have a significant impact on the lives of Americans, and we are grateful to you for being our colleague in this work.
Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your help in making the Conference a success.
Sincerely yours,
Stephen Breyer (thank you)

Georgetown, DE 19947Dear Mr. Holland:
I received your invitation to speak at the 95th anniversary of admitting women to the practice of law in Delaware. Although I am quite honored, regrettably, I have a long queue of preexisting invitations that I must accommodate prior to accepting any new invitations. Therefore, I am unable to accept your kind invitation at the moment. It is impossible for me to accept all of the invitations that I would like to and still meet my Court obligations.
Thank you for thinking of me.Warm regards,
