Tony Salgado Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

My name is Tony Salgado, and I clerked for Justice Holland from August 1987 to August 1988.

My year clerking with Justice Holland was one of the best years of my life. He, Ilona, Ethan and Kris all made me feel welcome in Delaware during that year, Justice Holland was a kind, thoughtful person with an infectious smile, a great sense of humor, and a great approach to life and the law and how to treat people and make them feel at ease.

For example, when I first started clerking, I would frequently come in to Justice Holland’s chambers in the morning and immediately start discussing a case. He would stop me and say with a big smile. “Good morning, Tony. How are you?” It did not take me long to stop doing this and to begin the morning in a more civil manner. Any time I forgot, this Justice Holland would remind me with a big smile. And this became a running inside joke for us.

Another funny story about Justice Holland is really an Ethan story. Ethan once told me that when he was young, Justice Holland would wave at him from his car as he left for work each day. Then one day he forgot. And Ethan was about to be disappointed when Justice Holland stopped, backed up and waved goodbye to Ethan before continuing on to work. I love that story because it captures Justice Holland’s personality.

Note: The law clerk remarks were limited in time due to the number of clerks.
