I am sorry to hear about the death of Ilona’s mother. She was a remarkable woman and led an admirable life.

    Dear Randy,

I am writing to see how the program is shaping up for the Appellate Judges Educational Institute to be held in Phoenix on November 13. Your letter of November 21, 2007, invited me to speak at the opening plenary session during the late afternoon of Thursday, November 13. A preliminary draft of the agenda would be helpful.

I have agreed to attend an event for Chief Judge Robert Henry of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals the evening of November 12 in Oklahoma City but if I am not scheduled until late afternoon, I should not have a problem returning to Phoenix.

I look forward to your thoughts about the program and
    other participants.

    With every good wish,
    Sandra

    Dear Justice Holland:

For two years now, the Sandra Day O’Connor Project on the State of the Judiciary at Georgetown Law has provided a forum for discussion of the independence of the judiciary at the state and federal level.

Among its activities, it has sponsored two conferences, the 2006 Conference on the State of the Judiciary, and the 2007 Conference, the Debate Over State Court Elections and Judicial Elections. In 2008, I have asked the Project to focus on another urgent matter: our courts and corporate citizenship. I am interested in this subject for two reasons: first, because I believe that independent courts are essential to preserve stable markets, and second, because corporate citizens are instrumental in moving the policy agenda of Congress and the state legislatures. I hope that the people who govern those corporations, from their shareholders to their CEOs, will join with me in the effort to keep our courts fair and impartial, and capable of attracting and keeping the best qualified jurists on the bench.

PLEASE HOLD October 2, 2008 on your calendar for Our Courts and Corporate Citizenship. The Conference will be held at Georgetown Law, 600 New Jersey Avenue NW, Washington DC from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

An invitation and registration information will be sent to you in late May. I hope that you will be able to join me for this important conference.

    Sincerely yours,
    Sandra Day O’Connor

  • Letter from Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to Justice Randy J. Holland: November 8, 2007

    November 8, 2007

    Dear Justice Holland:
Thank you so much for serving as a small group leader at the 2007 Conference of the Sandra Day O’Connor Project on the State of the Judiciary, State Courts: the Debate on Judicial Elections and Judicial Selection. Development of small group recommendations was an essential part of the Conference’s goal. I expect a summary of the recommendations will be published within the next month by the Project.

The Conference has contributed to an important discussion about how to insure that state courts will continue to be fair and impartial. The Conference gave those who have been working on best practices a high-level audience with the ability to affect practices in their home states. I hope that all those who attended the Conference will return to their workplaces and communities with a renewed appreciation of the importance of these issues, and will work to defend the independence of the state courts.

Your expertise fostered a spirit of collaborative inquiry in the small group you led, and has helped make it possible for the Conference to reach a consensus series of recommendations, as I hoped it would.

    Thank you for your help.
    Sincerely,

    Sandra Day O’Connor

    Re:

    Dear Ms. Dennis,
I write to add my note of unqualified approval of the nomination of Justice Randy J. Holland for the American Inns of Court’s A. Sherman Christensen Award. Kevin Brady’s letter describing the reasons for the nomination is thorough and accurate. I heartily concur in the recommendation for giving the award to Justice Holland. I have seen Justice Holland in action at any number of American Inns of Court programs and other events in support of the judiciary. He is highly intelligent and completely devoted to the goals of the American Inns of Court. I cannot imagine a better nomination.

    Sincerely,

    Dear Randy,
I trust you are saving the dates of September 28 and 29 for the conference in Washington, D. C. on the state of the judiciary. Your perspective and experiences will be very helpful. Someone will contact you about perhaps being a discussion leader or presenter in connection with it.

I appreciated receiving a copy of the Evans v. State opinion of the Supreme Court of Delaware which you sent me and your article on judicial discipline. You were right on target. The public is concerned about independence with accountability.

    Sincerely,
    Sandra
