• Shannon German Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

My life has been impacted by Justice Holland, because he gave me a chance as a first year law student. I had no idea what I was doing. No idea how to apply for jobs. I sent Justice Holland my resume. He met with me at TGI Fridays and offered me a summer internship with him.

That opportunity shaped the rest of my legal career, which I owe to having Justice Holland as a mentor and a role model.

He was an example of how to be a good attorney and also how to be a good human being. And for that I’m forever grateful.

  • Jenness Parker Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

Hi, I’m Jenness Parker. I clerked for Justice Holland in 2004-2005. There are so many things that I admire about Justice Holland, including that he always did the right thing and he always took the high road. These things were reflected in the way that he defused contentious situations. He responded every time with grace, decency and kindness for so many reasons, including that Justice Holland truly made this world a better place.

  • Elizabeth Beyer Shelby Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

I’m Elizabeth Byers. Shelby. I clerked for Justice Holland from 2001 to 2002. What I remember the most about Justice Holland besides being such an intellect, is what a wonderful and kind person that he was. He was a terrific mentor and always focused on his personal relationships and his family. I remember being sent home to be able to find out my bar results online, and it took longer than expected because of technical problems.

I know that he eventually called and found out, wanted to know if I had past or not, which I did, but he told me that I would probably be the last clerk that he would send home to be able to find out their bar results online from home. He cared that much. I appreciate all the opportunities that he gave me and he will be missed.

  • Mackenzie Wrobel Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

It’s a Herculean task to quantify the way in which Justice Holland has impacted my life, because there are the ways that I know, and then there are all the things that he did without me knowing, because he was such a tireless, but quiet advocate for all of us that I just learned to know there was no such thing as a coincidence when it came to Justice Holland.

But the important thing that I know he taught me that I’ll carry with me forever is that we are never too busy. We are never too important to be kind and to help others. I’ll miss you, my friend. Thank you for everything.

  • Tony Salgado Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

My name is Tony Salgado, and I clerked for Justice Holland from August 1987 to August 1988.

My year clerking with Justice Holland was one of the best years of my life. He, Ilona, Ethan and Kris all made me feel welcome in Delaware during that year, Justice Holland was a kind, thoughtful person with an infectious smile, a great sense of humor, and a great approach to life and the law and how to treat people and make them feel at ease.

For example, when I first started clerking, I would frequently come in to Justice Holland’s chambers in the morning and immediately start discussing a case. He would stop me and say with a big smile. “Good morning, Tony. How are you?” It did not take me long to stop doing this and to begin the morning in a more civil manner. Any time I forgot, this Justice Holland would remind me with a big smile. And this became a running inside joke for us.

Another funny story about Justice Holland is really an Ethan story. Ethan once told me that when he was young, Justice Holland would wave at him from his car as he left for work each day. Then one day he forgot. And Ethan was about to be disappointed when Justice Holland stopped, backed up and waved goodbye to Ethan before continuing on to work. I love that story because it captures Justice Holland’s personality.

  • Shaun Kelly Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

Justice Holland taught me more than I could possibly relay here in a short time. But the thing that I will carry with me and the lasting image of him is the way he placed his family at the center of what he did. His time with them was precious, and it was paramount. It was more important than anything else. That is the thing I try to carry with me, and that will be his lasting legacy in my life.

  • Tricia Handza Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

Hi, my name is Tricia Handza. I clerked for Justice Holland in 2009. Something I fondly remembered about him all these years is his just incredible work ethic, his commitment to getting it right, and his persistence with making sure he’s done a thorough job. But maybe even more than that, what I remembered is how good he is at Skee Ball.

I think if I played every day for the rest of my life, I still couldn’t beat Justice Holland.

  • Patricia Vella Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

My name is Patricia Vella. I clerked for Justice Holland from 1996 to 1997.

During my clerkship, Justice Holland’s son Ethan played the drums in a band with my husband. The band had a gig at a dive bar on the Main Line. Justice Holland arrived in khaki pants, a white button down shirt and a Navy blazer. Now, he may have been coming from another event, but suffice it to say, no one in the bar was dressed like him.

Actual photo from the evening. It turns out it was a brown blazer, but the description did it… justice.

My law school friends who were there weren’t quite sure how to react to a sitting Delaware Supreme Court justice being among them. I reassured them that he wasn’t there as a Delaware Supreme Court Justice. He was there as Ethan’s dad.

And that is the thing that I admire most about Justice Holland, his ability to balance his dedication to his family with his tremendous work ethic and all in a kind and humble way.

  • Suzanne Lufadeju Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

My name is Suzanne Lufadeju. I was Justice Holland’s Wolcott Fellow in 2010 and his law clerk in 2011. At that point in my career, Justice Holland believed in me more than I believed in myself. He was my first mentor and advocate. It took years for me to come into my own, to recognize my strengths and know my value.

When I last saw him before the pandemic, he was proud to see my growth and confidence and that I was thriving in my career.

His impact inspires me to pay it forward. I enjoy helping others recognize their potential. Planting that seed of confidence, as he did for me and countless others, is how I will continue to honor Justice Holland.

  • Matthew Goeller Remarks: Randy J. Holland Celebration of Life

Hello, my name is Matthew Goeller. One of my favorite memories of Justice Holland was when he and Dr. Holland, and my parents and I went to a Yankees baseball game. And this was when the big star on the team was Aaron Judge.

Justice Holland loved when the crowd would yell, “Here comes The Judge”. It was a really exciting game. The Yankees won with a three run home run in the bottom of the ninth, and he was happy about that.

But his favorite part was when the crowd yelled, “Here comes The Judge.”

He had such a great sense of humor, and I’ll never forget how fun he was and how excited and happy he was that day.

My life has been affected by Justice Holland in so many different ways. All his law clerks owe their entire careers to Justice Holland, and without being his student or his intern or his clerk, I know I would not have the opportunities that I had.

And apart from that career help, he taught me to be calm and to remain clearheaded in every situation. And he taught me to enjoy life and he inspires me every day. And I think about him every day, and I miss him every day. I hope these tributes provide his family with some comfort, and I hope they know how special he was to all his law clerks.
